Anti-Aging Treatments – Do They Work?

We see them everywhere—anti-aging creams, lotions and balms that claim they can firm, lift, rejuvenate or plump your skin and make you look younger. Should you buy a skin tightening cream or a skin lifting lotion? Or spend money on a cream that miraculously eliminates wrinkles? With new cosmetic products being added to shelves every day, making that choice can be difficult. It’s not surprising then, that many of us have our own private product graveyard in the vanity—everything we tried, hoped would work and simply didn’t do anything noticeable or worth mentioning.

Targeted largely at baby boomers, research reveals that anti-aging product sales amounted to approximately $2.05 billion in the United States in 2015. After all, we all want to retain our youthful looks. But do these product really work?

The Paula’s Choice Research Team delved into the world of anti-wrinkle and skin-firming products to find answers. They concluded that you should treat skincare like your diet. Relying on a single ingredient in a cream or lotion to firm up your skin is similar to eating just one type of food to fuel your body.

Here are 2 significant findings that stand out:

  • Majority of skincare products are moisturizers with added ingredients to support marketing claims. There is no inherent difference between a product labeled as a moisturizer versus those labeled anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, anti-gravity, lifting, firming and anything else you might come across.  This was corroborated by Dr. Zoe D. Draelos, a consultant for Proctor & Gamble, in her skincare research.
  • When shopping for anti-aging or skin-firming products, those with the  ingredients mentioned below are likely to be more beneficial:
    • Antioxidants – They can reduce or prevent some of the daily free radical damage and inflammation that destroy skin over time.
    • Skin-identical ingredients – These substances are found in young, healthy skin and help keep it smooth, retain water, fight infection and repair the outer barriers.
    • Cell communicating ingredients – Certain ingredients like niacinamide, retinol, synthetic peptides, etc. are believed to communicate with skin cells to help reduce damage and wrinkles.
    • Sunscreen – 75% of aging is caused by direct exposure to the sun. Using an appropriate sunscreen can help reduce wrinkles, chronic inflammation and age spots as well as the risk of skin cancer.
    • Match your skin type – Whether you should use a lotion, gel, serum, cream, liquid, or balm depends on whether your skin is dry, normal or oily.

Are Injectable Anti-Aging Treatments More Effective?
