Anti-Aging Chocolate – Can It Keep You Looking Younger?

Anti-aging chocolate! Wouldn’t that be deliciously perfect? You could satisfy your sweet tooth and melt away the years at the same time. Sounds so easy, but is it true? Or will ‘Esthechoc’ join the long list of anti-aging fads that people will have spent tons of money on, only to be disappointed? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, the scientists who created it in England would have us believe that this tiny chocolate bar not only slows down aging, but reverses it as well.

Also known as the ‘Cambridge Beauty Chocolate’, Esthechoc was created by Dr. Ivan Petyaev, a former researcher at Cambridge University. Made from 72.6% cocoa, each little chocolate bar is apparently infused with “extra antioxidants” that can reverse the effects of aging. Petyaev says that they have clinical studies to prove it. Below, we have summarized the claims he made in an interview to The Telegraph about the effectiveness of the world’s first anti-ageing chocolate.

  • Contents: A 7.5g bar of Esthechoc contains the same amount of the antioxidant astaxanthin as a fillet of Alaskan salmon, and equal levels of free-radical fighting cocoa polyphenols as 100g of dark chocolate. It is “the same antioxidant that keeps goldfish gold and flamingos pink.” Since it contains just 38kcal it is even safe for diabetics.
  • How does it work: It boosts antioxidant levels and increases circulation to prevent lines and keep skin looking youthful and smooth. Tests supposedly showed that after four weeks of eating this anti-ageing chocolate daily, volunteers had less evidence of inflammation in their blood as well as increased blood supply to skin tissue.
  • Effectiveness: It can change the underlying skin of a 50-60 year old into that of someone in their 20s or 30s.

The Sweet Truth about Chocolate

The word “antioxidants” has probably caught your attention. You want to know whether or not the “extra antioxidants” in Esthechoc are beneficial. Registered Dietitian Keri Gans told Yahoo Health that any high-quality chocolate has them. She explained, “Chocolate naturally contains flavanols, which are antioxidants.” However, she advised, “It is always best to try and consume from a whole food, rather than buying individual nutrients.”

So if not Esthechoc, then what type of chocolate is good for you? According to the dietician, any high-quality, non-designer dark chocolate would do. About Esthechoc Gains said, “It appears that this is strictly a marketing ploy to get the consumer to purchase their product.”

Is that the final verdict?

The truth is that the claims of this sweet and delicious new solution to ageing are still largely unproven.  Additionally, like most other anti-ageing products with big promises, it is also likely to come with a hefty price tag and be difficult to procure. Cosmetic injectable dermal fillers, on the other hand, are affordable, safe and easily available.

Are Injectable Anti-Aging Treatments More Effective than Chocolate and Creams?

Based on research and the dietician’s comments mentioned above, eating high-quality chocolate can be beneficial to health. However, there is little evidence to support claims that Esthechoc or other anti-aging lotions, gels, creams, balms, etc. can erase wrinkles and make you look younger or instantly rejuvenate your skin. Unfortunately, many women and men have realized this only after having spent hundreds of dollars on these products. As a result, they are now opting for Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Radiesse® and other FDA-approved injectable fillers instead. When administered by an experienced physician like Dr. Charles M.
