Study Shows FDA-Approved Injectable Filler Boosts Skin Elasticity for up to 4 months

According to a study published in the JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery journal last year, an FDA-approved injectable filler may be able to boost skin pliability and elasticity for up to 4 months.

Researchers Dr. James P. Bonaparte, of the University of Ottawa, and Dr. David Ellis, of the University of Toronto studied 48 women, with an average age of 55 years, who underwent cosmetic treatments with injectable fillers to reduce the appearance of mild wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. Among the 43 women who completed the study, the researchers found that the injections increased both the pliability and elasticity of their skin for up to 4 months.

Pliability and elasticity of each woman’s skin was accessed at the study’s baseline and at 2 weeks, 2 months, 3 months and 4 months after the filler was injected.

Does the Injectable Filler Boost Skin Elasticity?

According to the researchers*, Bonaparte and Ellis, this cosmetic treatment seemed to promote the production of elastin and collagen, proteins that make young skin tight, firm and flexible.  A decline in the production of these two proteins with age and repeated facial expressions cause skin to wrinkle and sag, explained Bonaparte. “We found if we treat people with fillers using standard techniques, we see an increase in elasticity, which is what you’d see in people with more youthful skin,” he said.

They concluded:

  • The treatment increased the stretchiness and elastic recoil of the women’s faces, causing changes that mimicked more youthful skin.
  • The effect was similar to radiofrequency skin tightening, an aesthetic procedure using radio waves to heat skin tissue and stimulate collagen production.
  • The effect lasts for approximately the same length of time as the effectiveness of a round of Botox injections—about three to four months.

The research team plans to investigate whether extended use of Botox can have long-term benefits for the face next.
